sash locks & lifts

Charleston Hardware takes much pride in manufacturing the most authentic reproductions possible. Antique American pieces are collected and molds and dies are painstakingly re-created from original American antique pieces. Each piece is made using the same techniques originally used over 125 years ago, and we are the only hardware company casting in the original composition of bronze.

Complete suites of each pattern have been reproduced, allowing hardware throughout the house to match. We assist building professionals and homeowners directly in the design, selection, and installation of hardware appropriate for a particular project. We offer customized hardware to fit existing antique locks and bespoke reproductions in the wrought, cast and lost wax from antique original pieces and schematics.

Their Story

Charleston Hardware Co. began in 1999 when owner Brad Williams restored a circa-1900 house on New Street in historic Charleston. After struggling to find period-appropriate doorknobs for the house, he decided to take matters into his own hands and establish an antique hardware reproduction business.

We have four foundries; a lock maker, a glassmaker, a ceramics maker, and a plater. By offering support in the design, selection, and installation phases of creating the perfect home -- we have been able to provide hundreds of customers with precise replicas of antique hardware and impeccable restoration services to complement their taste. Charleston Hardware Co. caters to architects, homeowners, and historians all over the country who are looking to restore the past.

PRODUCT-SPECIFIC

Sash Locks

Oriental Pattern

Branford Lock Works first produced this popular Eastlake pattern in 1884. Recurring design components include an open fan, the rising sun, and bamboo. We collected original antique pieces and remade the molds. Each piece is cast one at a time. Finishing is done by hand just as it was over a century ago. The relief has japanning to bring out the details. Noteworthy is the detailing on the reverse side of the doorknobs and on each hinge reveal that shows when the door is closed. Un-lacquered bronze, this series will acquire a soft statuary patina with time. Hand antiquing is offered to make the hardware look old at the time of installation. This series is compatible with tubular latches and traditional mortise locks. The wide backplate sets are compatible with pre-bored doors.

Lorraine Pattern

This neoclassical French-inspired pattern was originally made around 1900 by PF Corbin of Stamford Connecticut. We collected antique pieces and stamp them in solid bronze using the same techniques used over 100 years ago. This series is compatible with tubular latches and traditional mortise locks.

Avalon Pattern

The whimsical aesthetic of our art nouveau Avalon suite is the combination of two antique patterns: Olympia and Alby. We collected the ca 1900’s antique originals and faithfully reproduce them in stamped brass just like they were made over 100 years ago. Unlacquered, each piece will acquire an antique patina with time. This suite is compatible with tubular latches and traditional mortise locks.

Egg & Dart Pattern

The Egg and Dart neoclassical pattern was originally seen in ancient Greco/Roman architecture. The egg represents life and the dart death. This series appeared around 1900 and was cast in solid brass. We collected antique pieces and remade the molds. Each piece is cast one at a time in the finest sand to capture the smallest details. Finishing is done by hand just as it was over a century ago. The backplate and 3” rosette sets are compatible with standard 2 1/8” pre-bored doors.

Roanoke

The Art Nouveau Roanoke pattern was made around 1900 by P & F Corbin of Stamford, Connecticut. We collected the antique originals and reproduce this series in solid brass. The backplates and 3” rosette sets are compatible with modern pre-bored doors.

Rope

Early Greco/Roman architectural details often appear in door hardware. The Rope pattern dates to around 1900. We reproduced this complete suite from antique originals. Each piece is hand cast in brass and finished using the same techniques of over a century ago. The doorknob sets with back plates are compatible with new construction as well as old. Custom finishes are available.
