Why Save your Wood Windows ?
It all started when…
Industry came to Pennsylvania in 18th century… steel, oil, lumber, coal…
By 1930 Pennsylvania had effectively cut down all of its trees.
President Roosevelt, under a Great Depression works program, planted 50 million trees in our state and those are the forests you now see. ( there is an old growth forest within 2 hours of Pittsburgh, albeit a very small one called Cook Forest)
Are words necessary when comparing old growth wood to the wood used today by your replacement window companies?
Old wood windows were made from another time..
Since the tree could not grow fast, with it constantly fighting for light, water and space, it became hearty and strong and more disease / insect resistant. Today, they plant trees so there is no competition. It just grows and grows without developing any protections that nature originally offered. If I was a bug, I would eat the one on the left and save my teeth ( or mandibles)
On the left is what you buy at any box store. Now you know why an 80 year old grandmother can break a board with a karate chop. Try that with old growth wood and the only amazement will be how much your trip to the emergency room costs.
